SPS Acropora - Strawberry Shortcake
SPS (small polyp stony) corals are known to be the "advanced" coral. These corals are considered more difficult to take care of due to the requirement for strong lighting, strong indirect flow, and very stable aquarium parameters. When these parameters are not met or maybe if they were, SPS corals are known contracting RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis) or STN (Slow Tissue Necrosis). Add the fact that they are rather slow growers, reef aquarium owners usually wait until they are fairly comfortable with their tank before investing in this type of coral.
Interesting fact: Small Polyp Stony (SPS) Corals are the builders of calcium carbonate reef structures found in the oceans today. The skeleton of these corals is slowly secreted by the epidermis at the base of each coral polyp.
Care: Stony Corals benefit from clean water (low phosphates and nitrates) and a consistent source of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium.
